| How much does it take to be rich? Earl Kirby Feb 5, 2007 How much does it take to be considered rich? In recent programs on Fox news Cavuto has warned us all that when the Democrats talk about taking the rich they mean you. He brings up the speech by Senator Edwards where rich is defined as over $200.000 per year. Cavuto honestly believes this is only middle class and that in fact when the Dem's suggest repealing the Bush tax reductions on those making over $200,000 per year they are in fact raising the taxes not just on the rich but the upper middle class as well. Well, I’d like to throw some numbers at you. A “good” middle class job in America today is one that pays $10.00 per hour. That’s $400.00 per week or 20,800.00 per year. That’s about one tenth of $200,000. An “excellent” middle class job in America today pays $20.00 per hour. I don’t know many middle class Americans who wouldn’t be extremely happy with $20.00 per hour. That’s $800.00 per week or $41,600 a year. Now that $200,000 is almost 5 times the $41,000. Just too fully understand the numbers you need to understand that $200,000 per year is $3846.15 per week or 96.15 per hour. That’s $3846.15 every week or $96.15 for every hour. That’s not for billed hours. That’s for every hour. Now I’ve got to admit I don’t come any where near those numbers. I actually consider myself fairly well off. I don’t think of myself as having to do without much but than again I don’t want for much. My wife thinks we’re poor and I guess if $200,000 is middle class she’s right. You see I’m retired enlisted military and receive about $12,000 per year. Besides that I’m 63 years old and get Social Security of around $10,000 per year. That adds up to $22,000 per year and there’s only the two of us. Now I agree the wife’s car is a 1992 model and my truck is a 1998. But I own both and the insurance payments are quite low. We have a modest 3 bedroom home on a half acre lot with a 2 car garage that needs some repairs. I do have to save for them and can’t just go out and do major repairs or additions without major planning. I like to travel so I go to gun shows and flea markets on the weekends picking up enough extra cash to pay for the trips. I can’t imagine what living on $3,846.15 per week must be like. I doubt I will ever have the opportunity to experience it. Until that day I believe I will continue to consider $200,000 per year, rich.
