Do I Have to Hunt to Support the 2nd Amendment?

 Earl Kirby April 12, 2007

Mitt Romney is making it real hard for me.  He recently got himself into big trouble by claiming he was a life long hunter when in fact he had only hunted once when a teenager and once in his late 50’s.  Romney claims to be pro-gun.  According to syndicated columnist Joan Vennochi  when Romney ran for Senate in Massachusetts he supported two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the NRA. As governor, he supported the state's strict gun control laws and signed into law new restrictions on assault weapons.

Now, that is not unusual.  Politicians are always trying to cover their tracks and appeal to folks when in fact they have a history of working against the folks best interest.  Nothing new here.  The reason I bring up the fact that Romney is making it hard for me is I’m not a hunter.  Never have been and never will be.  Now, you’ve got to understand that doesn’t mean I’m anti hunter.  It means I’m not a hunter.  In fact if anything I wish you guys would go out and get all of those damn deer so I won’t have to worry about totaling anymore of my vehicles when I hit one.  My personal problem is I don’t care for the taste of wild meat and I don’t appreciate sitting in a deer stand for hours on end getting supper cold.  Hey, I’m perfectly able to go to the store and buy a steak anytime I want meat.

I want to make it absolutely clear.  I am not in any way an anti-gun supporter.  In fact for a long time I wouldn’t join the NRA because I thought they weren’t strong enough in their support of the 2nd amendment.  I subscribe to the theory that the government SHALL NOT INFRINGE and a lot of folks have sold out on that principle.  We have managed to change the right to own guns in America to the privilege of owning guns in America.  I’m so radical I believe the government should not deny a Felon the right to own a gun.  After all the government says the Felon paid the penalty for the crime and they freed him to return to the streets so he CAN’T be a threat to anyone anymore.

Now I also have to make another confession.  I’m not a shooter either.  I own a gun.  A 38 revolver (I’m sure it won’t jam if I ever really need to use it), but I don’t go to the range and play with it.  I slept with a shotgun for 18 months in Vietnam and spent countless hours on the range during 20 years of active duty.  I know how to shoot and really don’t find it a fun thing.  A necessary thing when it’s necessary but not a fun thing.  Again that’s me.

So, where am I going with this?  I guess I really don’t need someone to be a full blooded dye in the wool sportsman, hunter, or shooter to get my vote.  What I do want is a record of supporting the moral right to defend oneself, and a commitment to the following of the true intent of our founding fathers concerning the Constitution of the County.

Will anyone come forward and get my support?

Will someone please come forward and get my support?
